Dinosaur Storytime

Why are three-year-old kids endlessly fascinated by dinosaurs? Hmmm, let's see. Dinosaurs are giant, horrible monsters and... they're all dead! They've been dead forever! They have lots of teeth and they're SOOO BIG but there's NO CHANCE they could be under your bed. As we grow up, we know we have to face fears, so we start with dinosaurs...soon we'll work our way up to snakes.

Tyson the Terrible is one of my favorite readalouds. As the pages turn and Tyson grows closer, I turn up the volume and move down to basso as my BOOM BOOM BOOM grows louder. Or make those boom boom boom t-rex footsteps with a drum. And the great pop up appearance in the end makes this a great storytime attention grabber.

My (VERY BAD) Dinosaur Poem

(Use your dinosaur puppet & while you recite, go around the room biting at children's/apatosaurus' noses)
There was a great big T-Rex.
He loved to rrrrrrr
He roamed through the jungles.
He roamed near and far.
He snapped at a apatosaurus.
He snapped at a diplodocus.
He snapped at a pterodactyl.
He snapped at me.
He caught the apatosaurus.
He caught the diplodocus.
He caught the pterodactyl.
But he didn't catch me!

Librarian tip:
When a book, like this one, comes with fold out pages, a little care will prolong its freshness:
For fold up pages, which are kind of a surprise, reinforce the whole seam very well with clear shelf paper on both sides.
For fold out pages, trim them down as much as possible, so they won't wrinkle and crease as they get folded back up.

Story Time Line-up
Props: dinosaur flannels, T-rex
Intro: Tyson the Terrible; I'm Bad
Gripping tale: Are the Dinosaurs Dead, Dad?
Science & Math: If the Dinosaurs Came Back
Physical: Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp
Classic: Too Many Dinosaurs

These cute stegosauruses were downloaded from Public Library Program Ideas / Dinosaurs

The kids cut them out, and then painted them with poster paints mixed with flour, shown here. The idea is just to add enough texture to the paint to make it interesting. I showed the kids how to paint in swirls, like scales. Visit Family Fun for T-Rex Templates
