Pre-K Fish Storytime, Friday, February 24 @ 10:30

Books

Pop-Up Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae. Always works. Just long enough with a shark at the end.

Animals Called Fish j597.4. I marked certain pages in this book with sticky notes, and used it to settle this question: Are you kids here fish?  Do you know how to swim? Yes. Then you might be fish. Do you eat meat and vegetables? Yes. They you might be fish. Do you have a backbone (or spine, as Ronan pointed out.) Yes, then you might be fish. Can you breathe underwater, with gills? No, you don't have gills? Well, how do you breathe? Oh, through your mouth and nose. Are you covered all over with mucus, you know, the same stuff that comes out your nose? No?  No? Hmmm, fish do.  Well, how about this: when you were a baby, were you born out of an egg your mama laid? Are there any baby pictures of you being a cute loveable egg? No? Then I guess you really aren't fish!

The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark by Geist.  Props: three fish fingerpuppets and shark puppet. Easy to act this out with little fish fingerpuppets right on top of the pages of the book. They were agog.

Bull Shark by Deborah Nuzzolo.  This was from the Pebble Plus nonfiction series, and the kids really liked the info and big photos.

PlayPass out the colored scarves and start WAVING them around.  "Aren't they like the sea? The waves on the sea?"
1. The waves on the sea go up and down, up and down, up and down, the waves on the sea go up and down all day long.
2. The shark in the sea goes snap snap snap..
3. The fish in the sea go swish swish swish..
4. The gulls on the sea go swoop swoop swoop… (up and down)
5. The dolphins on the sea swim round and round, round and round, round and round, the dolphins on the sea swim round and round, all day long.     6. The swimmers on the sea float gently by, gently by, gently by, the swimmers on the sea float gently by, all day long (scarf on head)

The poem below works OK, but next year I would try passing out my little fish fingerpuppets (which they are all obsessed with) and then I would be the shark eating them up.  My guess is that they wouldn't want to be eaten, so I would have to rework the poem:  Four little fishes swimming out to sea, One met a shark and he swam back to Mom.
Four little fishes swimming out to sea,
One met a shark!...
And then there were three.
Three little fishes wondering what to do,
One hid in a great big shell…
And then there were two.
Two little fishes looking for some fun,
One chased after a wave…
And that left one.
One little fish with all his friends gone,
Went back home to find his mum…

And that left none!

Why did I let him go?
Because he bit my finger so.
Which finger did he bite?

Next Year: , Silly Faces Board Book, The Pout-Pout Fish by Diesen.

Swimmy by Leo Lionni.  "This is a book about a very brave little fish," I introed. Not a major hit with the kids though.

The River by Hanako Clulow  Short and informative and very beautiful book about a fish traveling down the river to the sea.
FISH by Lian Francis Walsh   Best for early readers -- almost wordless but the tale revolves around words.
Secrets of the Seashore by Carron Brown just wasn't doable in storytime. The text is a bit too long, and the pictures too small.  I just ended up promoting it and telling the parents they could check it out and take it home with their flashlights.
Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen
Big Al by Yorinks

Wiggle like an Octopus by Harriet Ziefert.  Boy, the kids really knew this interaction by the end of storytime!  It was juuuussst right.

EXCUSE ME!

Craft
Sequins, glitter, curly ribbon and contact paper (thanks, Monica, for cutting out all those jellyfish!) They were fun. I didn't have any curly ribbon, so we used crepe paper (cut thin wise by 1/3) and that worked even better -- attached right to the sticky contact paper, and the kids could tear whatever length they wanted v. easily.  During my into, I explained that I couldn't find my google eyes, but that was OK because I remembered that jellyfish don't have eyes! Or noses or mouths or anything like that!

My wonderful teen volunteer made a bunch of these paintbrushes for me: TP rolls with bubble wrap taped to the end.  I gave the kids a pallette of blues and greens and they bubbled up some beautiful seascapes, with the addition of green tissue paper they tore into strips for seaweed and stickers.

Pretty cute, huh?
